AngelList Blog

Collaborating with AngelList’s Editor, Emily Inverso, we created the following mantras to guide the design and publication of the blog:

  1. No ****ING stock photos
  2. Let Authenticity and craft draw them in
  3. The reader is human, not a search engine

‍

I art directed over 50 editorial illustrations with a diverse group of illustrators.

I made an effort to seek out illustrators who:

  1. Didn’t look like me
  2. didn’t have a background in tech
  3. lived outside of tech “hot spots”

The following is a selection of illustrations I've had the pleasure of art directing.

Illustration by Hannah Buckman for the article “How To Switch Engineering Jobs—And Actually Like Your New Role”

“How To Switch Engineering Jobs—And Actually Like Your New Role”

Illustration by Hannah Buckman London, England

“Why You Should Join A Regulated Startup”

Illustration by Grace Danico Los Angeles, CA

"How Remote Work Impacts Employees With Disabilities"

Illustration by Dean Strauss Chicago, IL

With each unique illustration, AngelList began separating itself from its stock photo ridden competitors.

“Why Naval Ravikant Hires Artists”

Illustration by Helena Covell London, England

"How Kimberly Bryant Started Black Girls CODE "

Illustration by Cheryl "Ras" Thuesday New Jersey

The illustrations draw the reader in, providing a sense of curiosity (and sometimes humor) to an otherwise heavy or cut-and-dry story.

“Why You Should Stop Hiring With "Grit" Interviews”

Illustration by Jeremy Leung Brooklyn, NY

"What To Do When You're Faced With An Exploding Job Offer"

Illustration by Victoria Roussel Lyon, France

“What Skeptics Get Wrong About Full-Stack Engineers—And Why We Need Them”

Illustration by Hawnuh Lee Portland, OR

”On Messing up Your Remote Team—and Then Getting It Right”

Illustration by Ashley Wong Toronto, Ontario

The high production value of the illustrations provide a handshake to the reader—a promise of equal quality in the article they are about to read.

"Over 60% of Employees Are Happy at Startups—FAANG and MSFT"

Illustration by Marley Allen-Ash Toronto, Ontario

"Is Your Hiring Process Hurting Diversity?"

Illustration by Daniel Fishel Brooklyn, NY
